Newspapers and Newspaper Indexes

Daily Press Index - An index to articles from January 1, 1989 to the present. The Library of Virginia has issues of the Daily Press available on microfilm from 1898-present (Film 14). Select coverage is available in the Newspaper Source Plus database (1997-2009; Nov. 2014-present) and  e-Library database (1999-present). Some early issues (1898-1910) are available on the Virginia Chronicle website.

*Daily Press Digital Microfilm (2010-present) - Provides complete issues of the newspaper (including images) which can be retrieved by date. Issues for the current year are added as they become available. Please note: The search function isn't operational and will always return a zero result.

*LexisNexis Library Express - Full-text articles from over 2,500 foreign and domestic newspapers including the New York Times (1980-current), Washington Post (1977-current), and USA Today (1989-current). Provides access to popular magazines such as Consumer Reports, academic journals, and television and radio broadcast transcripts. Includes death notices and obituaries.

 

New York Times Archive- Searchable index from 1851-present. Provides free full-text access to articles 1851-1922 and 1981-present. Articles for 1923-1980 are indexed, but must be purchased to view the full text online ($3.95 each). The Library of Virginia has the New York Times on microfilm from 1857-2009.

*Newspaper Source Plus - Full-text coverage for national and international newspapers, and radio/t.v. program transcripts. Virginia content includes select coverage for the Daily Press (1997-2009; Nov. 2014-), Free Lance-Star (2002-Nov. 2016; May 2017-),Carroll News (2011-), and Virginia Gazette (2009-). Select historical coverage is provided for many titles including the Progress Index (2008-2014), Roanoke Times (1998-2013), and Manassas Journal & Messenger (2007-2009).

*Richmond Times-Dispatch Current (1985-present) - Provides full-text access (no images).This database includes articles from the Richmond Times-Dispatch from Aug. 19, 1985-present and from the Richmond News Leader from Aug. 19, 1985-May 30, 1992. However, all articles are cited as being from the Richmond Times-Dispatch. For citations, the microfilm of the newspapers can be checked to determine the correct source.

Charlottesville Reflector - (Race and Place Newspapers / UVA) - Database of select articles from 1933-1935. Provices article summaries and transcripts.

Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers - (Library of Congress) - Searchable digital database of U.S. newspapers (1860's to 1920's) which includes over 40 Virginia titles. Also provides information about American newspapers published from 1690-present. [VA title list]

Daily Press Obituary Index (Newport News Public Library System) - An index to obituaries that appeared in the Daily Press (1898-1988) and the Times-Herald (1902-1915). The Library of Virginia has extensive coverage of the Daily Press (Film 14) and Times-Herald (Film 15) available on microfilm. Issues of the Daily Press (1898-1910) can be viewed on the Virginia Chronicle website.

Daily Progress Digital Edition (1893-1964) (UVA; Jefferson Madison Regional Library) - A digital edition of the Charlottesville newspaper the Daily Progress.

Fairfax County Public Library Historical Newspaper Index - Index to over one million records from ten local newspapers.

Fredericksburg Research Resources - Indexing for 11 newspapers, as well as the text of selected city directories, codes, city charter, ordinances, and census lists.

Google News Archive - Collection of searchable historic U.S. and foreign newspaper and magazine content spanning the 18th-20th centuries. Free full-text viewing is available for many titles, but it's not possible to save or print articles. Includes substantial content for the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star (1920's-2006).

*HarpWeek - Harper's Weekly, America's leading 19th century illustrated newspaper for the years 1857-1912.

NCSE (Nineteenth-Century Serials Edition) - Online scholarly edition of six British nineteenth-century periodicals and newspapers.

*Newspaper Archive - Digital collection of select issues of more than 5,000 national, local, and foreign newspapers, with some content dating back to the 1700's. Virginia titles with extensive coverage include the Bee (Danville, VA), Bluefield Daily Telegraph, Danville Register,  Harrisonburg Daily News Record, Progress Index (Petersburg, VA), Pulaski Southwest Times, Radford News Journal, and Winchester Star.

*Proquest Civil War Era - Digital collection of newspapers and pamphlets covering the period of American history from 1840-1865. It includes nearly 2,000 pamphlets and complete runs of eight newspaper titles (including the Richmond Daily Dispatch from January 14, 1852 - December 30, 1865) that were specifically selected for the regional and diverse perspectives they offer. 

*Proquest Historical Newspapers. Norfolk Journal and Guide (1916-2003) - Digital reproductions of pages.

Richmond Planet (Race and Place Newspapers / UVA) - Database of select articles for 1890-1894, 1906, and 1934 from or about Charlottesville or Albemarle. Provides article summaries and transcripts.

*Richmond Times-Dispatch Historical (1903-1986) - Digital reproductions of pages.

Valley of the Shadow - Transcripts and pdf facsimiles of newspaper articles from Augusta County, Va., and Franklin, Pa., 1857-1870.

Virginia Chronicle - This database includes Virginia newspapers from the National Digital Newspaper Program's Chronicling America project, as well as unique Library of Virginia content such as the Virginia Farm Bureau News. The database is searchable with full-page views and added features that allow for cropping and printing.

Virginia Gazette - Digital images of the newspaper, 1736-1780; indexed by date and topic.
